Janani Suraksha Yojana has been started by the Central Government with the aim of improving the health of pregnant women and newborns. This scheme aims to promote institutional delivery for pregnant women and reduce neonatal mortality. The Janani Suraksha Yojana will provide ₹1,000 as financial assistance to pregnant women at the time of delivery.
This scheme was launched for the benefit of mothers and their unborn children. Through this scheme, women are provided financial assistance, which helps provide adequate nutrition to both mother and child. Approximately 10 million women benefit from the scheme every year.

What is Janani Suraksha Yojana?
The central government launched the Janani Suraksha Yojana, which is operated under the National Health Mission (NHM). The scheme aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. Under the scheme, ₹6,000 is directly deposited into a pregnant woman’s bank account upon delivery. Pregnant women receive free checkups and delivery of the baby. The central government spends ₹1,600 crore annually on the Janani Suraksha Yojana.
The Janani Suraksha Yojana benefits rural women with ₹1,400 and urban women with ₹1,000. Additionally, women enrolled in the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana receive ₹5,000. The primary objective of implementing Janani Suraksha Yojana is to provide financial assistance to pregnant women from economically poor families, so that they can remain healthy during pregnancy. Under this, an expenditure of Rs 6000 is provided to women, out of which they are paid directly into their women bank accounts.

- The woman who is pregnant must be over 19 years of age.
- Women living below the poverty line will be eligible for the Janani Suraksha Yojana.
- Only those women will be eligible who deliver at a government health center or at home.

To benefit from this scheme, pregnant women must register for their delivery and birth at a government hospital. After registration, the government provides financial assistance.
