PM BJP initiative has played a crucial role in making generic medicines accessible to the public. The scheme seeks to provide quality-assured generic medicines at significantly lower prices through an expanding network of dedicated Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) across the country. The branded (Generic) medicines are sold at significantly higher prices than their un-branded generic equivalents.

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana aims to provide quality medicines to the public at affordable prices. For this, PMBJP stores are being established, which provide medicines at low prices. It was launched in 2008 by the Department of Pharmaceuticals (under the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers), to provide quality generic medicines.

Its primary objective is to promote the use of generic medicines. The scheme makes medicines available at prices 50% to 80% lower than branded alternatives.

Due to the poor menstrual hygiene conditions in India, sanitary napkins are required in Jan Aushadhi establishments. The “Janaushadhi Suvidha” initiative sells oxo-biodegradable sanitary napkins for ₹1 per pad.
